ABOUT NSCAG

Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign Action Group is the leading organisation in the UK supporting peace and progress for the people of Nicaragua.

Through more than 46 years of profound political change in Nicaragua, the UK and globally, NSCAG, together with its former sister organisation NSC, has facilitated deep bonds of mutual solidarity between UK and Nicaraguan organisations.

In this way, we have continued to work to build a society based on social, economic and environment justice, free from outside interference.

Solidarity is about mutuality of values, common understandings, friendships, and uniting to fight national and international injustices. The essence of solidarity is political and moral support, and mutual learning, above all the feeling of not being alone.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

The NSCAG Mandate

Campaign

We campaign in defence of Nicaragua’s sovereignty, right to self-determination and right to live in peace.

Support

We support social, economic and environmental justice in Nicaragua through championing Nicaragua’s successes in reducing poverty and the role played by the trade unions and the social economy

Work in Solidarity

We work in solidarity with trade unions, co-operatives and organisations representing the social economy by promoting their work and linking them with like-minded UK organisations.

Reject sanctions

We reject illegal sanctions and external aggression, in particular by the United States, and any attempts to thwart the will of the people of Nicaragua through ousting their democratically elected government.

NSCAG ACTION PLAN

We carry out this work through

Promoting an understanding of the situation in Nicaragua and building active support in the UK trade union movement

Channelling political, financial, and moral solidarity to our partner organisations in Nicaragua

Fostering and maintaining links of support and solidarity between UK and Nicaraguan trade unions in order to share knowledge and experience and enhance mutual understanding

HOW WE OPERATE

Our funding and structure

We rely almost entirely on funding from our trade union affiliations and individual members. This means that our UK-Nicaragua solidarity work is dependent upon the commitment of our members and supporters. We also put out regular appeals in an effort to increase the resources that we have available.

NSCAG is a membership organisation with both individual members and trade union affiliates. We have over 150 individual members, 11 national trade union affiliates and around 150 trade union regions and branches.

Our Annual General Meeting elects an Executive Committee which is responsible for the overall governance of the organisation

Speaker tours and delegations

We build bonds of mutual solidarity between Nicaraguan and UK organisations and communities through organising visits by representatives of our partner organisations to the UK and delegations from the UK to Nicaragua.

A highlight of our recent work has been exchanges between UK teachers of Spanish and Nicaraguan teachers of English, a partnership between the National Education Union (NEU), Nicaraguan teachers’ union ANDEN and NSCAG.

Visits to Nicaragua took place in 2017, and 2022, and a delegation of Nicaraguan teachers visited the UK in 2023.

Information on Nicaragua, our partner organisations & UK -Nicaragua solidarity

Through online and print publications, briefings, social media, videos, and webinars, we disseminate news and features about Nicaragua, our partner organisations and UK–Nicaragua solidarity activities.

We produce a monthly newsletter circulated to our members and supporters and other organisations who have an interest in our work.

Our priority is information reflecting the perspectives of our partners and the realities of Nicaragua.

Events

We organise events to raise awareness about Nicaragua and the work of our partner organisations.

This includes our own webinars on a wide range of topics and co-hosting webinars organised by our international partner, the Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition.

We also participate in events organised by other UK organisations such as the Cuba and Venezuela Solidarity Campaigns, with which we co-operate closely.

The main one of these is the annual Latin America Conference, a flagship event which brings together several hundred experts, academics, trade unionists, politicians and activists from the UK, Europe and Latin America.
